Overview

MatterReady sends SMS messages to users only after they have explicitly opted in through a verified consent flow. We do not send unsolicited text messages. All SMS messaging is initiated only after a user completes the steps described below.

Opt-In Process

Users opt in to SMS messaging through the Phone & SMS Verification section of their account profile. The process requires three explicit steps:

Step 1: Enter Phone Number

The user enters their phone number in a form field on their profile page. The phone number must be a valid US phone number.

Step 2: Consent Checkbox

Before the phone number can be submitted, the user must check a consent checkbox. The checkbox is unchecked by default and includes the following disclosure language:

Add & Verify

The consent checkbox must be checked before the user can proceed. The "Add & Verify" button is only enabled after the user has entered a valid phone number and checked the consent box.

Step 3: Phone Number Verification (OTP)

After submitting, MatterReady sends a one-time 6-digit verification code via SMS to the phone number provided. The user must enter this code to complete verification. The code expires after 10 minutes and the user has a maximum of 5 attempts. Code requests are rate-limited to 3 per hour.

Only after the verification code is confirmed does MatterReady mark the phone number as verified and eligible to receive SMS messages.

Message Types

MatterReady sends the following types of SMS messages to opted-in users:

  • Verification codes — One-time codes to verify phone number ownership
  • Security alerts — Notifications about account security events
  • Account notifications — Updates about consultations, appointments, and document status changes

Message frequency varies based on account activity. Msg & data rates may apply.

Opt-Out

Users can opt out of SMS messaging at any time by:

  • Replying STOP to any SMS message from MatterReady
  • Toggling off SMS consent in their account profile settings
  • Removing their phone number from their account profile

After opting out, no further SMS messages will be sent to that phone number. Users can re-enable SMS at any time by toggling consent back on in their profile.

Data Handling

Phone numbers are encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM encryption. Only the last 4 digits are stored in plaintext for display purposes. Phone numbers are never shared with third parties except as required to deliver SMS messages through our messaging provider. For more details, see our Privacy Policy.
